March Wrap Up!

Hey Beautiful Booklovers! So sorry this is a little late, but better late than never, right? Today’s post will be covering what I read in the month of March – which hasn’t been my greatest reading month, but never mind, we all have to make do with the cards we are dealt.

This month has been a slow one for me, and I also went off the rails with my TBR, I didn’t manage to complete it, and ended up picking up different reads instead. This isn’t unusual for me, if I’m being honest, I do this frequently but it is something I’m trying to do less.

1 – The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I keep forgetting that I technically finished this in March because it released at the end of February, but turns out I did. Anyway if you have been around here before you will most likely know I’ve already posted a review for this beauty- which you can access here! I loved this book it was great, and I am really gutted that it is a standalone!

2 – The Extinction Trials by S. M. Wilson

My Rating:🌟🌟🌟. 5

I did enjoy this book, and found it an easy read, but I am sad to say I didn’t by any means love it. It was interesting enough to get through (despite some of my small issues with it), but what I am still unclear on is if I want to continue with the series. This is book 1 of 3 and currently I am still not sure if I will reach for the next book. Of course, if I do pick it up you beauties will be the first to know!

3 – Warrior of the Wild by Tricia Levenseller

My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Again, you may already know I posted a review for this beauty here on my blog! I really enjoyed this book. The world was so fantastic, the character arcs were spot on, and considering the short amount of pages I was amazed at how attached I was to this story! It’s definitely one I recommend!

4 – An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

My Rating:🌟🌟

*Sigh* This was not originally on my TBR for March, but I was in a bit of a slump and felt something short would be ideal to help. This book wasn’t fantastic, and for the first third of it I was actually questioning my decision. Not a lot happens, things are rather slow to start and quick to resolve, and I just didn’t ship the romance, but that’s just me. It wasn’t as good as I would have liked it to be, and when a friend asked if she should pick it up I genuinely said “you’re not missing anything if you don’t”! I think that pretty much sums up my feelings, don’t you?

5 – Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

My Rating: 🌟🌟🌟.5

So, I was really excited to start reading this, and as I got into it I found it wasn’t as great as I wanted it to be. I was really not finding it captivating all that much…until towards the end. That’s when things picked up for me, and made me really pay attention, and because of that ending I will continue with this series. That being said I really felt like this book suffered from ‘sagging middle syndrome’ and that bothered me a bit – hence the rating.

6 – Wintersong by S. Jae- Jones

My Rating: 🌟🌟

This is another one that I hadn’t planned on reading this month, but picked it up because I was in the mood for some magical Goblin Kings, and romance. It was a lot of romance, and whilst I was kind of expecting that what I didn’t like was that the main character had a goal, then completed said goal, and then instead of getting a new goal pottered around doing sweet FA for the plot for a couple hundred pages. 80 pages from the end I literally was like “WTF is happening? What is her goal?” I don’t like books that have a main character lacking a goal/ motivation, and in the second half of this book I really felt as though this was the case.

7 – Once and Future by Amy Rose Capetta & Cori McCarthy

My Rating: 🌟

I tried! I tried so hard to get into this bloody book, and finally decided to DNF at 40%. It just wasn’t for me at all! My rating is so low based on the fact that I didn’t actually finished it – didn’t have the will to finish it. You may love it, but it really didn’t do it for me. If you want to know my thoughts you can find my review on Goodreads!

So there you have it, my disastrously bad reading month lol! I’m hoping April will be better (fingers crossed)!

Have you read any of the above? What were your thoughts? Do you strongly agree or disagree with me on any of them? Let me know in the comments below!

Book Buying Ban!

Hey Beautiful Booklovers! So sorry I have been absent lately, it turns out third babies like to play games of false labour with you…how fun! But I’m back and baby is still cooking for now, but I will warn you that it could be any day now (so if I disappear for a bit you’ll know why)! Rest assured my March Wrap up and April tbr will be coming at you this week!

Anyway, enough of that, today’s post is all about my new rule – No more buying books!

Okay, so let me start by saying that this is long overdue for me! I have an impulse problem when it comes to purchasing books, and I’m finally putting my foot down! I buy more a month than I can physically get through, and that’s just stupid. I have decided that I need to behave myself and tackle the books I have on my shelves – which is too damn many!

So, for the foreseeable I will not be buying any new books, and clearly you don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to note I said NEW. Which means I am allowing myself the treat every now and then to purchase a pre-loved book if I manage to work through a load of my tbr! This is just an option – to be honest, I plan not to buy any, but knowing me I have to factor in the urge to buy lol!

I just think it’s time for me to get through my huge tbr and this at least ensures I’m checking off more than I’m bringing home. That being said, I will point out I have kindle unlimited, and may venture down that avenue occasionally too, but since I’m off kindle reading right now (yes, still) I don’t see that being a big issue.

Anyone want to join me on my good behaviour? We could struggle together lol?

How many books a month do you read? Are you terrible for book buying like me? Or are you a good booklover, and rarely buy new? Let me know in the comments below!

Reading Update #8

Hey Beautiful Booklovers! Another week and another reading update! I can’t believe a week has passed already, it just seems crazy to me! I feel like I haven’t gotten a lot of reading done since I last updated you all, but I have finished another book so that’s something I guess!

Books I have read since last update

So, in my last update I mentioned I was about 100 pages from finishing Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, and I did finish it that night so yay me! I know there are some of you who want to know my thoughts on this book so I plan on doing a review for it at some point – keep an eye out for that!

Another book I started and finished since my last update is Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones. It’s roughly about 500 pages so that is why I haven’t gotten much else read this week, however I wasn’t as pleased with this book as I wanted to be, and while the writing was beautiful the book itself fell short in my opinion. Trust me when I say no one is more upset by this than me!

Books I am currently reading

I have tried again with Once and Future, but I honestly think it is the format letting me down at the moment. I just can’t seem to read anything on my kindle [crying hysterically be right back]. It is so frustrating because I love reading on kindle. It means I can read in bed without keeping the light on. It means I can carry it easily where ever I go, but no…clearly it isn’t working for me right now, and it’s heart breaking!

I have picked up Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill today, so literally am about 10 pages into it right now, but am excited about this story, as I have heard many good things! Let me know if you have read it and what your thoughts were.

Books I plan to read next

Same as last week, I generally want to read the arcs I have, but we shall have to see, because as I said e-copies aren’t doing so well on my tbr at the moment! If not then I will probably pick up something with a dragon in it to lift my spirits aha!

What are you reading at the moment? Have you read any that I have mentioned above? If yes, what were your thoughts? Also, how many of you want to see a full review for Red Queen, or are you happy for me to talk about it in my wrap up alone?

Huge, huge thank you to Mani over at Mani’s Book Corner for nominating me for The Versatile Blogger Award! You’re awesome Mani! Go check her out Booklovers! I am so excited/ nervous to share some facts with you all; it’s always scary for me to share things on her that focus on myself, but I am really excited to do it nonetheless!

7 Facts About Me!

  1. I am a complete science geek, I love all things Quantum Physics, and Quantum Mechanics, as well as Astrophysics! I just find it so fascinating because there are so many theories to wrap your head around, and the facts are always altering. (Not to mention that even those dedicated to studying it find it difficult to contemplate!)
  2. I love to draw! I am terrible at it lol, but nonetheless I love to try, and whilst I’ll never sell anything it’s a nice way for me to unwind.
  3. I sing…a lot! I feel very sorry for my neighbours because I am always belting out tunes at the top of my lungs whilst doing simple tasks like laundry etc. I’ve not had any complaints (yet) but I still feel for them all the same!
  4. I joined the Army at 16 to be a part of something bigger than myself, and that is how I came to meet my husband!
  5. I have a chronic pain issue from an injury sustained during service which causes a lot of issues throughout my day to day life.
  6. I love to write, and currently have several projects; a few are finished (though will not see the light of day aha!) and the rest are either ideas or are in the process of being written. I write primarily for myself, again like the drawing, it is a way for me to unwind and calm myself. It helps me de-stress and I don’t know if I’ll ever publish, but I will continue to write regardless for my own enjoyment.
  7. Since I was 12 I have suffered with disordered eating, I am very lucky to have the support of my husband who always helps me stay on track, and I have not had a relapse in a long time, but it is still something I have to deal with, and believe these things should be spoken about instead of hidden.

Series I Still Haven’t Finished!

Hey Beautiful Booklovers! I will firstly apologise profusely for my absence, I haven’t been on here a lot, and the truth of it is that whilst the cold/flu finally decided to leave I still have the small thing of being at the end of my pregnancy lol! I am getting pretty close to my due date and my energy levels have plummeted, so please stick with me booklovers – I’m trying!

Secondly, I’ve been meaning to do this post for a couple of weeks now. It was supposed to go alongside the post I did on Series I Don’t Plan on Finishing. Anyway, better late than never! This is a lit of series that I have started, like, and fully intend to continue on with soon!

1 – The Grisha Triology By Leigh Bardugo

So, I’ve finished the first book Shadow and Bone, and I honestly really enjoyed it! To be completely honest with you I have no idea why it is taking me so long – perhaps because I got spoiled for the ending of book 3…Yes I am crying!!! I guess because of that I am really scared to continue, but considering I enjoyed book one, and love the world I really do want to come back to it!

2 – Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

Again I have read the first book, and really enjoyed it, but still…still haven’t continued on with it! Ahhh! I need to continue, I will continue, but as of yet still haven’t. I am shame faced right now!

3 – Hush Hush by Rebecca Fitzpatrick

Okay, this series is fairly recent to me, and if I’m honest…I am trash for it! I’ve only got one more book to read, and I think I’m putting it off because, well, it’s the end!! It’s always bittersweet for me to finish a series, the excitement is always accompanied by sorrow!

4 – Strange the Dreamer Duology by Laini Taylor

As you may know I recently read this (last month) and I fully intend to continue on with the story, because honestly how could I not! That ending was insane! Honestly, to those who haven’t read it, jump on the damn train!

5 – The Farseer Triology by Robin Hobb

Another one I recently read, and of course am excited to see how it continues. I really like Robin Hobb’s writing, and really believe the next book in this trilogy will step things up!

6 – The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I read Cinder a while back and adored it! It was awesome; the setting, the premise, the writing! The only reason I didn’t continue straight away was because I borrowed this from the library, and they didn’t have the second book [cries dramatically]! After that I just picked up something else, and unfortunately forgot to pick this series back up again! But I will continue because I NEED to know what happens!

7 – The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

I read the first book (yes, this one too!) but need to pick up the others. I have the next one sitting waiting for my attention, but as of yet haven’t reached for it. I am late to this series, but do want to continue with it at some point in the near future.

8 – Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

When this first came out I grabbed it. I read it, and thought hmm it was okay…not as amazing as I wanted but okay. Then the second book came out and I heard people claim that it was everything they wanted/ needed from the first. So, of course I was intrigued, and picked it up from the shop, but still haven’t actually read it! WTF! I have a problem!

9 – The Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard

This is a book I literally just finished last week, but I’m adding it to this list because this series has been on my TBR for so damn long! I enjoyed this book and I can honestly say I wasn’t overwhelmed by it, but I am interested in where it is going to go, and for that reason I will continue.

10 – The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan

I love dragons! Have I ever mentioned that? I loved this book, and it was such an interesting dragon story. I still haven’t finished the series though, but I fully intend to because…DRAGONS!

That was hard work! Trying to think of 10 was more difficult than I originally anticipated, but we got there in the end!

Have you read any of these series? Or like me have you started them, but not quite gotten around to finishing them yet? Are you outraged by any of the above, I love knowing what reads you all love and adore, or on the flip side dislike. Let me know in the comments below!

Warrior of the Wild by Tricia Levenseller Review

Synopsis – From Amazon

Eighteen-year-old Rasmira has always been both praised and scorned for her talents. As her father’s chosen heir, she has trained her whole life to become a warrior and lead her village.

Fortunately, her long wait is almost over and after she passes her coming-of age trial, she’ll finally be able to live on her own and not have to deal with her mother’s constant rejection or the jealousy of her peers. Perhaps then she will be able to be both a warrior and a woman. But when trial day arrives, everything goes terribly wrong. Her test is sabotaged, and by law all those who fail are banished and given an impossible quest to reclaim their honor in death. And Rasmira is given the most difficult quest of them all: She must kill the oppressive deity who claims tribute from her village every year or die in the attempt.

My Review

The short version? I really loved this book. Give me female warriors, and axes any day! Tricia Levenseller is great in her ability to tell a good story in a short book.

Okay so, I loved the world, I loved the creatures, and I loved the characters.

The world was one I would happily steal into…you know, if I was a bad-ass warrior who could take down all the dangerous creatures! We follow Rasmira on her journey into banishment after she is wrongly sabotaged in her coming of age trials. What I loved about this book was Rasmira’s character arc! She really comes into herself so much throughout the 336 pages. You get to see her develop, and trust and oh my gosh, I loved it!

The creatures…honestly I really loved all the new crazy and dangerous things that roamed in the wild of this novel. I always get excited about new creatures in books, and Tricia Levenseller didn’t disappoint me!

Now, if you have read Tricia Levenseller’s Daughter of the Pirate King duology, you may know that she is a fan of sexy romances. This book did have a romance element to it, but what I loved about it was that it did not overpower the main plot. It was there, but my attention was still firmly in place where the characters overall goals lay.

This book gave me action, teamwork, great character arcs, great world building, and amazing new creatures.

Overall, I would say pick it up if you love a good female warrior, beautiful friendships, complex family dynamic and an awesome fantasy world.

My only regret? It’s a standalone [insert – me crying into a pillow]!

Have you read this book yet? Is it on your TBR (It definitely should be Booklovers)? I’m so happy I read this book, but then again I am a massive fan of anything even loosely viking themed! Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Reading Update #7

Hey Beautiful Booklovers!! Another week another, another reading update!

Sorry this one is coming at you so late in the day, but I’ve been suffering a bit with my chronic pain etc, so things haven’t gone swimmingly the last few days!

Anyway enough of that, lets get to it!

Books I have read since last update

You may remember I was having a tough reading week last week, and the week before but this past week has gone better thankfully. I’ve managed to read Warrior of the Wild by Tricia Levenseller and An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson.

Both were fairly short reads (300-350 pages) which I think really helped with my mini slump!

Books I am currently reading

I’m about 100 pages from finishing the red queen, maybe a little less than that which is good, and I’ll let you know my thoughts on it when it’s completed!

I honestly haven’t tried again with crown of feathers again, its not the book, I think it’s me on kindle at the moment. I’m not having any luck with any of my kindle reads, and that’s why I’ve only managed to finish physical copies this week. Not sure why I’m having this issue, quite frankly it’s a pain in the ass πŸ˜πŸ˜‚! I Normally love reading on my kindle 😭!

Books I plan to read next

I want to finish crown of feathers and once and future but as both are on my kindle I’m not so sure it will be a success, I may pick up Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones next just because I’m in the mood for some faerie stories!

Random Tidbits

I have a review coming tomorrow for Warrior of the Wild so keep an eye out for that, I’m excited to talk about this book!

What are you currently reading? How has your past week been? Let me know in the comments as usual, you know I love hearing what you are all up to 😘!
